Bedtime For Your Kids With Mindfulness

Getting Ready To Sleep

After a busy day filled with physical activities like running, jumping, kicking, shouting, chatting; loaded with new stuff, new learning; emotional drama with friends, parents, classmates, your child is totally exhausted. And at the end of the day he gets so cranky and irritable, its too difficult to handle. He needs rest, soothing comfort, love and your presence at the end of the day.

  • Having a bedtime ritual helps your kid to gain control on himself.
  • It brings discipline.
  • It makes bedtime more easy.
  • Irrespective of the kind of day he had, it helps him enter into bed with peace and positivism which can be a great habit for the lifetime.
To wind up the day, put a soft music to run in the background.

Start with

Preparation for the next day:
It can be putting in the books needed for the next day, keeping ready the dress and accessories. Initially you may help him and once he is accustomed you can do your preparation while he does his.
Try to be calm and speak less in the entire process.

Hygiene before entering the bed:

Brushing teeth at night will bring down your visits to the dentist.
Gargling can be beneficial to prevent  frequent throat infections in kids.
Make him wash face, hands and legs, which needs less time compared to shower or bath.
Keep clean, light, loose, cotton  dress to wear which can help in easy breathing.

Food for thought:

Once you settle in the bed  read together a short story fun filled or with happy ending, or the one which makes your little one's imagination bloom, or the stories of courage, achievement.

You may keep variations by narrating the stories or asking your kid to narrate one if he knows.

In touch with inner self:
Ask your little one to close his eyes ( if he is reluctant its alright, let him keep them open) and a small prayer, or sholka,or a verse from bible or quoran in a rhythm softly.

Make him share or just reflect on what made him happy on the particular day. Teach him to be thankful and show gratitude.

Make him chant "Om" five to seven times. You too can join him.

Now let him sit quietly for a minute just observing the breathing pattern. by now your kid would be feeling calm and all the stress relieved.

Your turn:

Now snuggle inside the blanket with a good night kiss showing him how important your kid is and how much you love him through your gestures or words. This is so very important in making him feel confident and loved.

And there your child in a deep slumber to wake up with more energy and vigor, with joy and  positivism.
