Correct Your Child's Posture

The other day my son came out of the room with a dupatta tied as a turban and other dupatta tucked around his waist. He stood in front of me with a toy sword and a sheild in his hands, his feet firm on the ground, slightly apart, posing strength and valour, pulled back his shoulders and said "I am the king Ashoka".
The point I want state here is, even kids know if they want to look like their favourite superhero they need to maintain a typical body posture. Parents can use this for their advantage in improving their kid's posture.

Why is posture so important?

  • When the posture is right, body is in harmony. There is no stress formed in any part of the body.
  • Right posture gives a firmness and helps balance as you walk or sit or move about or work.
  • Right posture aids in proper breathing and easy digestion
  • It makes you feel good and confident.
  • Good posture enhances your looks.
  • It helps in clarity of speech.
  • Good posture helps in avoiding spine related problems in future.

Having known the benfits, let us see how we can help our kids in having a good posture while sitting, standing, or while doing any activity.

  • While standing, one should stand with feet little apart and weight of the body evenly distributed. Unknowingly kids or even we adults put more stress on one leg sometimes while standing.
  • While sitting, make sure your kids feet touch flat on the floor. Other wise use a footrest.
  • Make sure your child sits  completely relaxed in chair or on the floor.
  • Use a good chair with proper lumber support.
  • Height of the study table should be right. If too high adjust it by giving cushion while sitting.
  • Make your child push himself back when he sits on chair. Don't let him sit on the edge of the chair and recline.
  • Correct him when he slouches or bends too much while studying or doing any task.
  • Make sure your child doesn't sit or stand in an awkward position for a long time.
  • Any complication formed at this age can worsen in the future as the bones are still delicate.
Apart from this
  • Send your child to dance class.
  • Or let him learn gymnastics
  • Or any kind of martial arts.
  • Teach him Surya Namaskaar or Sun Salutation. This is the best exercise to strengthen spine.
  • Or send him to yoga classes. If not atleast do Tadasan. This helps in having erect posture.
  • Sitting in Vajrasana  is also very useful.
Your little prince or princess when grow up will be very thankful to you for giving him a perfect physique.
