Improve Your Child's Speech
SPEECH
Your child is almost 5 years and you find other kids of his age speaking more clearly, more fluently, and using appropriate words, where as your kid is struggling to find right words, some of the sounds are still unclear. This can be a thing to worry especially during social gathering where there are chances of comparison between your child and other kids. Even before going to speech therapist you can try some exercises at home.
Among all the aspects that help in fluent speech, Listening plays the key role. But not all kids are good listeners.
And last but not the least, your confidence in him, your attention while he speaks, your interest in his topics and your listening skill will make a difference you want.

- You can make them good listeners by telling stories.
- While narrating story and even otherwise you must have a clear speech with proper pronunciation. If you tend to speak fast, consciously try speaking with slow pace, but be audible. Ask questions in between and listen patiently to the answer.
- Encourage him to speak, to give his opinion, to share his feelings, and while you are listening to him have proper eye contact and show interest in him. This will make him feel good and confident about himself
- Play good music. Teach rhymes or songs or sing along with your child.
- When you go out with your kid be talking with him about what you see like the shops, vehicles, people. Try describing things so he can learn new words.
- After your kid comes home from school or classes or party, ask him questions regarding the event, or ask him how the day was, what he learnt, what he played, whom he met and many And What questions.
Different organs that help in having proper speech are lips, tongue, palates, nose, throat etc. So some exercises will help proper working of these organs.
- Saying aloud the words starting with Vowels with exaggerated lip and jaw movements i.e stretching sound "ae" in apple.
- Repeating "OM" at least 5 times daily will make nasal sounds clear. This also helps in proper breathing.
- While repeating OM make your child sit erect with spine straight. Right posture helps in throwing voice and sounds effectively.
- Teach him few tongue twisters put more emphasis on articulation. This helps in improving the sound of P, B, Ph etc.
- Create story by adding one sentence at a time by each ( you say a sentence and your kid adds another and then you)
Improve your child's cognition as unless and otherwise he has a clear thought he wont be able to verbalize it.
Clarity of thought, understanding his emotions, understanding opposite person's speech and responding to it happens through proper cognition.
- Make your child trace with finger the sound he feels difficulty with.
- While he is tracing let him say the sound aloud.
- Show him pictures, or actual things related to the word.
- Work on improving his understanding rather than just making him chatter box.
- Play game ( you say a word and your kid says word closely related to the word you said, then you say a word closely related to the word he said) apple, sweet, chocolate, brown, wood, tree.
And last but not the least, your confidence in him, your attention while he speaks, your interest in his topics and your listening skill will make a difference you want.
