Teach Kids Life Skills: Stay Safe On Roads

I was waiting at the signal. The signal went green and vehicles started moving in speed. A boy in his teens, with a school bag on his back rushed in front of the vehicles intending to cross the road. Only because the vehicles had not picked up much speed, the boy was saved from a mishap.
This made me think, " Do our kids really know traffic rules?" Yes, I consider knowing traffic rules , having traffic sense is a Life skill. Children ought to have traffic sense to keep themselves safe. Though schools teach this, though it is included in the curriculum,  parents must educate their kids on keeping themselves safe when they are out of homes.

  • Tell your Pre-schooler to always keep a safe distance from any heavy vehicle. Most often mishaps occur when the child is very close to the van or bus (can be front or rear) as he is out of the driver"s view. Tell him to be with his peers when outdoors. ( Show them with the help of toy car and dolls.)

  •  Your little one now in first or second grade must have learnt about the traffic signal, zebra crossing, Though he never goes out without you he too needs to know few more things. he knows not to peep out of the school van but tell him to be seated in place when the van is moving and not to fight or play in the moving vehicle. ( While you are pretend playing with him, enact one as the driver , others as passengers and the van is moving. one passengers starts moving around and falls down. "Wheels On The Bus" rhyme can be used for more effect.

  • Your teenager  must be riding his dad's bike just nearby your house, but always tell him not to hurry and maintain right speed.  If he has to cross the road by foot, he should wait for the pedestrians signal to turn green.

  • If  your child goes to school by government transport or if in any case has to board a bus, tell him to be careful while getting down. many times people get down the bus even before it reaches the bus stop when it is waiting at the signal. this is too risky as there may be other vehicles coming in speed and not expecting any one get off the bus at the signal and may hit you.
